Bangiogram is a toasty, close-fitting, reversible colourwork cowl designed to keep the wind off before you go for a swim or a stomp. The pattern is inspired by Bangio Pubescens, simple marine diatom algae or as I like to think of them, tiny plant heroes.

The cowl starts with a provisional cast on. The colourwork and stripes are knit in the round and finished with a grafted seam to produce a supremely cosy double thickness, single loop cowl. Links to helpful videos are provided. This could be a good project if you are learning to manage two strands of yarn as there are no single stitches and the pattern repeat is relatively straightforward. There are some longer floats but these are hidden within the tube of the cowl and do not need catching.

Level
adventurous beginner/intermediate

Techniques
provisional cast on, knitting in the round, two colour stranded knitting, grafting.

Finished measurements after wet blocking
circumference approximately 55cm/22” height 20cm/8”
Finished gauge after wet blocking 28 stitches and 26 rows over 10cm/4”.

Notions Scissors, tapestry needle, spare yarn for provisional cast on, 2 stitch markers, 3.5mm short circular needle (I used 7cm tips with a 35cm cord) or preferred length for magic loop or DPNs.

Suggested yarn requirements
A 50g/175m fingering weight yarn suitable for colourwork
B 50g/175m fingering weight yarn suitable for colourwork

I would recommend two high contrast woollen spun yarns to show off the pattern and achieve a coherent fabric. This is the minimum amount of yarn I would recommend at this gauge. If you want to make the cowl larger or smaller you can add or omit some of the stripes but bear in mind you will need extra yarn when adding stripes (or colourwork repeats).
